Comparison of the defect detection capabilities of flash thermography and vibration excitation shearography
نویسندگان
چکیده
The defect detection capabilities of transient thermography and shearography have been compared using optimum excitation methods for each technique: short pulse heating for thermography and vibration excitation using a piezoelectric transducer for shearography. A signal-to-noise ratio and limit of detection analysis has been performed on defect images obtained by the two techniques using the different excitation methods. Test samples considered in this paper are flat-plate samples made from aluminium, mild steel, stainless steel, CFRP and thermoplastic, containing flat-bottomed hole artificial defects of 20mm diameter at depths ranging from 0.5mm to 3.0mm.

متن کاملDefect detection of pipes using shearography and lock-in infrared thermography
Dept.of Mechnical Design Eng., Chosun Univ., 375 Seosuk-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, Korea, [email protected] In this study, shearography and infrared thermography were used for measuring the wall thinning defects of the nuclear power plants pipes. It is very important to measure the wall thinning defects inside the pipes, because the wall thinning defects cause damage or destruction of the pipes. T...
متن کاملQuantitative Evaluation of Pulsed Thermography, Lock-in Thermography and Vibrothermography on Foreign Object Defect (FOD) in CFRP
In this article, optical excitation thermographic techniques, including pulsed thermography and lock-in thermography, were used to detect foreign object defect (FOD) and delamination in CFRP. Then, vibrothermography as an ultrasonic excitation technique was used to detect these defects for the comparative purposes. Different image processing methods, including cold image subtraction (CIS), prin...

This paper reviews shearography and its applications for testing of composite structures. Shearography is a laser-based technique for fullfield measurement of surface deformation. Unlike holography, it does not require special vibration isolation; hence it can be employed in field/factory environments. The technique has already received considerable industrial acceptance for nondestructive test...
متن کاملShearography and Applications in Nondestructive Evaluation
This article reviews shearography and its applications in nondestructive testing. Shearography is a laser-based technique for full-field and non-contacting measurement of surface deformation (displacement or strains). Despite being a relative young technique, it has already received considerable industrial acceptance, in particular, for nondestructive testing. One major difference of shearograp...
